Winlink — Radio Email Starter Path

Emergency Communications Beginner 90–150 min plus station setup and practice 7 steps

Start by understanding what Winlink is and how messages move through the system. Install/configure Winlink Express, create or confirm your account, and prove the basic message workflow over Telnet before adding radio variables. Then learn how gateway channels and service codes work, move to an RF method such as VARA FM, packet, VARA HF, or another supported mode, and finish with the Book of Knowledge for forms, peer-to-peer operation, troubleshooting, and emergency-communications practice. Use only frequencies, modes, power levels, and gateways permitted by your license and applicable rules.

When you finish this path

Send and receive a Winlink message over Telnet, understand the difference between internet and RF sessions, identify an appropriate gateway, and be ready for a supervised first radio session.
